What's Nice About Small

I took this photo of Lake Worth's downtown in late 2010, just a month or two after I moved here. There was something about this line of small downtown buildings that seemed so quaint to me. It still does, though I don't think I've seen it this quiet since I took the picture. There are always cars parked in front of these businesses now, and many more people on the sidewalks than there were then. I suspect that word has spread about Lake Worth's charms, and that more people are now visiting.

It's hard for me to look at this picture and imagine five or six-story buildings, as the mayor is proposing to allow on our downtown streets. It would be an awful shame for these buildings to lie in the shadow of large boxy buildings, or...and I hate to even think of it... to be torn down to clear space for larger buildings to be built in their place. Who would want to come here then?
